HCDS Consulting Scope

Health Care Development Services, Inc., is a strategic planning and business development management consulting firm. Our practice began in 1981, and we have represented over 350 hospitals, healthcare systems, and pathology groups regarding laboratory and pathology issues.

The scope of our practice is entirely within the health care industry, with approximately ninety percent of our projects involving laboratory and pathology issues. The remaining portion of client assignments deal with overall strategic planning issues concerning other ancillary service development, such as emergi-center, ambulatory surgery centers, and radiology/nuclear medicine.

The HCDS staff consists of medical technologists, Ph.D.s, pathologists, and general management personnel with advanced degrees in either business administration or health services.

 

Client Projects/Services

The scope of HCDS assignments in the clinical laboratory arena is exceptionally broad. Some of our client engagements have included the following issues:

  • Assessment of Laboratory Operations and Organization
    Detailed review of comparative staffing, productivity, financial performance, user satisfaction, operations, and organizational relationships with recommendations for improved efficiency.

  • Multi-Hospital Laboratory Consolidation
    Financial feasibility, evaluation, and implementation assistance for centralized laboratory systems.

  • Joint-Venture Development of Collaborative Laboratories
    Assessment and development of joint venture arrangements to provide multi-institutional laboratory services.

  • Outreach Program Profitability Analysis
    Evaluation, analysis, and planning to determine the profitability of clinical laboratory services in markets outside of the hospital.

  • Pathology Group Arrangements
    Benchmarking of hospital paid pathology group compensation, development of contracts between hospitals and pathology groups / employed pathologists, and evaluating pathology group organizational effectiveness.

  • LabLeadership Executive Search®
    Retained search on behalf of hospital and health care system clients for laboratory Medical Directors, Administrative Laboratory Directors, and other senior laboratory leadership positions.

  • Outsourcing Analysis
    Review of operational and financial issues relative to outsourcing portions or entire clinical laboratory services. Analysis of service, quality, and financial implications.

  • Managed Care Contract Development
    Evaluation of current laboratory operations and costs to organize profitable managed care contracts for managed care plan services.

  • Laboratory Transition Management
    Interim assistance to clients in implementing change. Working with client laboratory directors and hospital administration, the on-site HCDS staff help work through difficult operational and organizational issues.
